Name a road after Penang’s twin city Xiamen

PENANG should name a road stretch Lebuhraya Xiamen or Xiamen Street in honour of the twin city relationship between George Town and Xiamen, China.

Lee Hack Teik (BN – Pengkalan Kota) said both cities had many similarities, especially the Hokkien language, culture and heritage. Both were tourist destinations, with harbour trade centres, heritage trails and seafood centres.

“Last September, the Xiamen government invited state Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan and Penang Municipal Council president Datuk Zainal Rahim Seman to name a street in Xiamen as Penang Road. “It is only proper for us to reciprocate this kind gesture,” he said when debating the Chief Minister’s speech.

Lee suggested the road name for the upcoming Jelutong Expressway Phase II stretch from Sungai Pinang via Prangin Canal and Prangin Estate to Weld Quay. He also called on the state to remove the low concrete walls surrounding Komtar to make it more accessible to the public.
“We should upgrade and promote the Komtar promenade similar to Kuala Lumpur’s famed Bintang Walk. “There should also be integrated development at the Komtar tower and Prangin Mall,” he said.

Lee proposed that the lifts in Komtar be replaced with computer-controlled smart lifts, while closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) should also be installed in the area for public safety.
